Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Mims Davies MP, and what struck me most was not just her knowledge and commitment, but her authenticity.
As a Minister, a leader, a mother, and an advocate for communities across Sussex, she embodies something we need more of in leadership: conviction combined with genuine listening.
We had an open and honest discussion about the challenges facing Sussex today, from roads, schools, and local infrastructure to the realities facing SMEs, startups, and women in business. The conversation wasn't about politics. It was about people, businesses, and creating practical solutions that make a difference.
One topic particularly close to my heart was the challenge many UK businesses face when selecting critical service providers such as payroll, HR, and accountancy partners.
Too often, businesses are expected to navigate a complex marketplace with limited guidance. When things go wrong, responsibility can become blurred. Employers are told they remain accountable for compliance, yet many lack the tools, knowledge, or independent resources needed to confidently assess providers before engaging them.
I shared a proposal aimed at helping HMRC support businesses through greater transparency, independent assessment criteria, practical FAQs, and clearer guidance when selecting payroll and related professional service providers. Not a preferred supplier list. Not endorsements. Simply better information, clearer visibility, and stronger decision-making tools for employers.
The objective is simple: help businesses identify trusted, compliant, and transparent providers while reducing risk, improving confidence, and strengthening outcomes for employers and employees alike.
I'm incredibly grateful to Mims for her support, engagement, and willingness to discuss innovative ideas that could genuinely help UK businesses thrive.
Next step on this specific journey...meeting with the Department for Business & Trade to discuss proposal as WHY NOT? I know I am just ONE person and usually these proposals are delivered by the Big 4 but I know I can deliver RESULTS that are NEEDED! Watch this space
Leadership is not just about making decisions. It's about listening, challenging assumptions, exploring solutions, and creating opportunities for positive change.
Thank you, Mims, for an inspiring conversation and for your continued commitment to Sussex, its businesses, and its communities.
